"British workers, fed up with their jobs, are flocking
to work as volunteers overseas, giving up high salaries and a comfortable
way of life at home." "A survey conducted among employees in Britain found
that more than half of people thought they were forced to become workaholics
to keep up with the demands of their jobs. Of the 1,000 people interviewed,
almost two-thirds said that given the choice between a job they enjoyed
and one that paid more but was less enjoyable, they would choose the job
they enjoyed." Extracts from an article in The Independent, by Jeremy Laurance,
Health Editor. January 1999.
This graffiti in central Paris made us reflect on the lack of fulfillment
and recognition that working people face today. It is true that not all
of us have the same opportunities, but many examples of unconformists prove
that there are alternative ways of doing things without necessarily becoming
an outcast. The business world neednīt be boring, tense and fierce. We can
all contribute a little to make work fun and interesting by replacing long-established
rules with more creative ones.
Santamaria certainly believes in having a good time at work because for
us there is no division between work and life. Life is work and we are always
surrounded by design. We canīt detach ourselves from it after 5pm, neither
can we avoid our personalities coming through what we create. We each want
our life to be an enriching experience Ð not only because we want to
enjoy it, but because it is our personal experience that inspires us to
produce good design. Having an outsiders' point of view of British society
is often an advantage for us. Our mindset says, Yes! But there is another
way of doing this; let me show you!
That is why we love to cook lunch for our clients instead of taking them
out to an expensive restaurant. It is good to treat people as people and
not just as a name or title from the company they represent. We like to
think that they are people like us, whose dreams, aspirations and frustrations
have made them what they are. Diversity takes a bit of effort, but it is
definitely worth it. |
